Menswear Mondays-New Look Press Day 2011

We are deep in winter now. Frost is encrusted across the solid ground as we make our way into work and the night sky forms a blanket of darkness over the world when it is only just the early afternoon. Tuesday 29th November was no exception as I made my way across London for the New Look press day. When I arrived there however, it was a different story.

Ultra minimal white walls were punctuated with neon bright accessories, rails upon rails of pastel shaded clothes filled the rooms, occasionally broken up by neons and khakis. This was the first glimpse of next season's collections.

The menswear was situated in a small room alongside the childrenswear collection and even though the collection is small, it does not disappoint. New Look have broadened their horizons and taken a confident step forward with its use of colours, prints and fabrics. The collection is fresh, edgy and authentic, drawing it's inspiration from the British music scene of the 1990's and cult movies such as 'Point Break' and 'Rebel Without a Cause'. A heavy 1950's influence permeates through the collection combining retro resort prints, pastel Oxford shirts and colour block chinos. One thing is for certain, the silhouette for this collection is clean, tapered and instantly cool.

With the 2012 Olympics approaching fast, a sports luxe look was created by combining colour block jerseys,  lightweight panelled nylon jackets and high tops to give an urban twist to a classic look. The key thing for SS12 is having the confidence to wear bright colours and daring to be bold with your choice of prints.

The key trends in menswear for Spring/Summer 2012 are:

1950's Americana-(think James Dean)

Sports Luxe-(glamorous, up-market sports wear with a tailored twist)

Navajo-(Sun-drenched colours, straw hats, pops of neon and stand out prints are essentials)
